Breathless Punta Cana Resort & Spa
Reviews
Made the plans for the trip 4 days in advance, had an emergency and had to cancel. Breathless left me breathless when they charged me $500.00 for canceling. Yep! Should of had insurance. You would think if we planned a trip to a resort that was not even close to fully booked they would at least give us a credit so we would come back and spend more. I understand the rules and I am sure this will be shocking to some people but was $500 worth the $2000 I would have spent to come back in 2 weeks. Ask The Royal Hideaway in Mexico, we go 3 times a year and have for 5 years now. Thanks Breathless
What a diaster. On arrival the first thing we encountered was a sales pitch to up grade the room for an extra cost. We agreed to the upgrade based on the view and the added ammenities of expanded mini bar new paper delivery to the room and private lounges and breakfast and lunch dinning. After a long trip that began at 2AM we were then asked to sit for another sales attempt to get us to by in as a member. It took being a little forcefull to finally get to out room and get our luggage. The room was filthy you could run your hand over the dresser and come up with it covered with dirt the bed skirt had big brown stains all over it. After some complaining we were moved to a different room which was at least clean. SOme of the lights and the shower head did not work but it was clean. Each day at least once we called down to have the mini bar restocked with the exception of a bag of coffee and a diet coke on the second day the mini bar was never restocked in the 8 days we spent at the resort. Calls to get the paper delivered to the room were also to no avail. We called for room service one afternoon which never arrived. Over all the resort public areas are clean and the staff is very polite. Wait staff in the dining rooms is very accomodating and the same with the maids. The beach has limited sandy areas to swim but in basically decent. Over all the staff has issues with english drink orders do not come back as ordered my wife ordered a Kamakizie and we ended up with a Blue Hawaii. I asked for a diet coke and received an Iced Tea. The server never returned with the Diet Coke. Food was excellent a large selection of many different styles. On the last day we could not get anyone to pick up our bags and had to carry them to the front desk ourself. I scheduled the bag pick up at 7AM for 9:15 and after 2 calls no one was there yet at 9:40 and we had a pickup scheduled at 9:45. We have stayed at their sister resort Secrets and would go back but we will not stay at another Breathless. The extra charge for the upgrade is not worth the money they only thing we got out of it was a partial ocean view.
Breathless Punta Cana is a great resort - not quite yet five star, but it's getting there! The location - grounds, beaches, rooms are all beautiful. The food however, is not. It made us sick, and didn't taste too great going down either. As one of my traveling companions gesticulated, the head chef is probably a trained pastry chef because all of the deserts were delicious, but the hot food was questionable at best. If you're going to go, go between December and April, as May and the summer can be quite dicey in terms of clouds and rain. We went in May and it was partly cloudy the entire time.
Having stayed here in mid-May, Breathless Punta Cana is a great option for those looking for an all-inclusive resort. The beach and grounds of the resort are brand new, beautiful, and with a well designed layout. There are 2 main pools with the first being a large, winding pool that's pretty large and the second is a small rectangle that has a DJ in the afternoon to attract the "party" crowd. The weather was pretty standard with sunshine all morning with the clouds rolling in around 2/3pm so definitely get an early start! Bar service was pretty good but make sure to ask for a shot of rum/vodka on top of your drink as they are usually not very strong. The food is very average. Having been to several all-inclusives, I found the food to be average but above what I had expected from other experiences. My travel companions did not enjoy the food at all (with a disclaimer that they've never been to an all-inclusive and are foodies). The hibachi was good but not very flavorful. The "contemporary cuisine" restaurant was surprisingly delicious. The negatives include the awkward sales-pitch of the concierge for you to explore a near-by 5-star resort where I assume they will try to sell you a timeshare or other package. There were numerous coupons offered at check-in as well, which although they were great and can be used at the spa, it was very time consuming to sit through. A good portion of the staff does not speak English well but they do their best and will ask if you understand (best not to get frustrated as we are visiting their country after all!). All-in-all, Breathless is a good resort but can definitely get to 5-star quality by improving the food and service, which I believe will come with time (as they opened a few months ago).
Breathless Resort & Spa is a beautiful property. The staff is very friendly and attentive. The food is decent at the main buffet, however, the specialty restaurants are really good. I was impressed at how clean and well maintained the property was from the pools, to the rooms, to the beach.
