Modern Day Spa
Reviews
I had my first facial at the Modern day Spa a couple of days ago. The preparation process was fine. I arrived 15 mins early, as requested, changed over, filled out a short questionnaire and sat in the waiting room for a few minutes. I had no idea who my esthetician would be. It turned out to be Ruby. She has a number of glowing reviews and for good reason. Ruby clearly enjoys her work, has a vibrant personality, and kept me entertained with conversation during the entire process-- which is good, because I found her far more interesting than the music. I'll certainly request her for my next visit and recommend you do the same.
I have been going to Modern Day Spa (at the Pentagon Fashion Centre, metro level) for the past 2 years. I usually see Valerie for manicures, pedicures, and waxing. She is very patient and sweet. She is pretty popular, so you definitely need to make an appointment with her. She is off on Thursdays and Sundays (I think). For massages, I definitely recommend Simone and for facials I'd recommend Guljan. Both ladies are also very patient and sweet. Appointments are recommended for them, too. I usually make my appointments using their online system. It's definitely better than it was before and it's definitely easier than calling their office directly. I have not had a bad experience with their customer service/front desk. They have always been very professional and greet me by my name when I arrive for my appointment. The only issues that I have had to deal with are waiting on the phone to schedule an appointment and waiting in the lounge for my appointment. They are usually pretty busy, so it's not too bad and they are always apologetic to me when I have to wait. Update (2/19/13): Another recommendation for a massage is Ruby and for facials is Venera. I was told that Guljan is no longer working at Modern Day Spa.
I went to this spa and I was a little nervous because it is in the mall but it's completely quiet. The front desk staff was nice. I had a facial and a massage. The facial was pretty good. The masseuse was a little annoying in the beginning because he kept talking to me when I just wanted to relax and get my massage but overall the massage was good...until the fire alarms went off and I was forced to deal with an uncontrollable blaring noise. My masseuse got up and tried to put towels over the alarms but he bumped into some equipment which went crashing to the floor. I couldn't relax and my massage ended about 10-15 minutes early. I wasn't extremely upset because the spa has no control over the alarms going off but I figured they would have me come back in to finish another day or give me a discount. I was told no managers were in and I would have to pay. Two weeks later and 2 messages later, a manager never called me back. When a manager finally contacted me, she informed me that the fire alarms never went off during my service. How could someone who wasn't present tell me such a thing! She proceeded to tell me that my service ended before the alarms went off. What kind of manager tells a customer she is lying? I was so upset and offended. I called the management office at the mall and they said that they routinely have to check the alarm systems from time to time. I would never go back to this spa again and I don't anyone should. My experience went from decent to horrible in a matter of minutes and no one should do business with any company who doesn't strive to protect their customers from bad service!
Staff is friendly, but the actual services are subpar. Purchased a basi mani/pedi, and there was nothing relaxing about it. The girl was in an awful rush, and it felt like I was in an assembly line rather than receiving a spa treatment.
I have to say, I'm surprised by these bad reviews. I can only speak for the massage services, but I've really enjoyed this place for what it is. Sure, when I want a luxurious experience I go to the Mandarin Oriental but when you need a quick fix - this place hits the spot every time. Juan Carlos is fantastic and Ruby is what I've been searching for since my travels in SE Asia.
